(5:20 p.m. BST) -- A professional rugby player from Ireland has won a Royal Caribbean competition, beating off more than 37,000 other applicants, to travel the world and document his experiences on Instagram on behalf of the cruise line.

Harry McNulty, 26, from Dublin, will be paid £6,000 upon completion of the apprenticeship that will see him become one of the first visitors to the line's brand-new private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Caribbean, which opens in May.

The winner will also explore and photograph his way around Japan, Alaska, Europe and the Middle East, while working closely with the line’s official Instagrammer-in-Chief, Russ Francis, who won a similar competition in 2016.

McNulty, whose own Instagram handle is @saltynuts, will be assigned to seek out new land-based experiences for the line's shore excursion programme, following an induction onboard Independence of the Seas when the ship returns to the UK next month.

The competition launched in January 2019, open to budding Instagram influencers in the UK and Ireland over 21 years of age.

MuNulty's winning entry -- a 30-second video shared with his 4,000-plus Instagram followers -- was selected by a judging panel made up of The Vamps’ James McVey; travel writer Nadia El Ferdaoussi; Royal Caribbean’s Instagrammer-in-Chief Russ Francis and Royal Caribbean's AVP and Managing Director UK & Ireland Ben Bouldin.

Ben Bouldin said: "We loved Harry’s entry which was a unique piece of content featuring him capture various adventurous experiences around the world. This not only demonstrated his photography and storytelling skills, but also showed-off his dedication and passion for travel - two attributes that are integral to this role.

"We’re confident that Harry will be able to seek out extraordinary new shore experiences to share with the world and inspire our shore excursion team to offer our guests even more incredible adventures at our destinations around the world."

Harry McNulty added: "This has come as a bit of a shock, but an amazing one… even just to be included in the shortlist was a huge achievement, but to actually get the position out of 37,000 applicants is incredible. The chance to travel the world and inspire people by capturing content of extraordinary places – over half of which I’ve never been to – is the opportunity of a lifetime. I can’t wait for the adventure to get started and give it everything that I’ve got!"
