(5 p.m. EDT) -- In an effort to be more "on par with other cruise lines," Princess Cruises has raised the gratuities automatically charged to passengers' onboard accounts.

The daily, per-person rates will increase by $1 and affect all cruises departing on or after May 21, 2019. Passengers staying in standard cabins (interior, ocean-view and balcony) will be charged $14.50 (up from $13.50); mini-suites will increase to $15.50 (up from $14.50); and suites will go up to $16.50 (from $15.50). Booked cruisers who have prepaid their gratuities before May 14 will not be affected by the changes.

Cruise Critic first heard of the new gratuities on its Princess forums, where member Elorac123 said they received an email from the line alerting them to the new rates. Others confirmed they got the same email.

In a statement, Princess said: "The increase underscores our commitment to reward our crew for the excellent service provided to our guests."

This is the first time Princess has raised its daily gratuities since 2016, when the line increased its rates for a second time that year. The change follows similar moves made by Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America Line in the past year.
