(10 a.m. EDT) --

Update: According to members on the Cruise Critic message boards, Carnival Vista will emerge from dry dock four days earlier than originally expected, offering a last-minute four-night sailing, which will sail roundtrip from Galveston on July 23, calling on Cozumel.

More than a week ago, propulsion issues caused Carnival to alter and cancel cruises onboard Carnival Vista. Now, the cruise line has released details of how Vista will be repaired: a first-of-its kind floating dry dock.

Netherlands-based Boskalis, a marine solutions company, will load Carnival Vista onto Boka Vanguard, a semi-submersible transport vessel capable of lifting 117,000 tons. This can happen by filling Boka Vanguard's ballasts with water and lowering its deck below the water surface, allowing Carnival Vista to float on. Once the ballasts are emptied, Boka Vanguard's deck will lift Vista out of the water, allowing for the repairs to be made in this makeshift dry dock.

"This groundbreaking procedure ... is a revolutionary way to ensure Carnival Vista's repairs are completed in a safe, timely and efficient manner so the ship can resume its popular seven-day schedule from Galveston later this month," said Lars Ljoen, executive vice president of marine operations for Carnival Cruise Line.

The portable dry dock will arrive in Bahamian waters on July 5 to await Carnival Vista's arrival on July 12. After the floating dry dock repairs are complete, Boka Vanguard will drop Vista off at the Grand Bahama shipyard for additional repair work. In total, the repairs are expected to take two weeks, which should allow Carnival Vista to depart as planned on a July 27 voyage out of Galveston.
