(2:50 p.m. EDT) -- Over the past several months, Norwegian Cruise Line has completed extensive refurbishments on three ships -- Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Star and Norwegian Sun. Ships received an updated design and new venues. The refurbs are part of the line's Norwegian Edge fleetwide refurbishment project.
"What a year this has been for us at Norwegian Cruise Line," said Andy Stuart, the brand's president and CEO. "Not only did we introduce our latest and record-breaking ship, Norwegian Bliss, and announce the redeployment of her sister ship Norwegian Joy, but we are now unveiling our newly revitalized ships, Norwegian Breakaway, Sun and Star."
Debuting on Norwegian Breakaway is the new American rock 'n' roll bar and lounge Syd Norman's Pour House, modeled after influential rock houses such as CBGB's, The Rainbow and the Fillmore. The space features vintage decor, diner-style seating and a playlist of classic rock from the late 1960s to 1980s. Syd Norman's Pour House replaces Fat Cats Jazz & Blues Club.
The name is a tribute to the grandfather of "Rock of Ages" playwright Chris D'Arenso, since "Rock of Ages" is the showcase musical on Norwegian Breakaway. Three times a week, during an interactive Syd Norman's Experience with cast members from the show, passengers can enjoy specialty cocktails, such as "The Witchy Woman," named after classic rock hits. Six nights a week, a five-person rock band will play classic rock.
Other areas touched during the refurb included the Bliss Ultra Lounge, which got new furniture; all staterooms and suites, which got new carpeting; and the gift shops, which were fully overhauled. Staircases, elevators and lobbies also all received new carpeting.
New venues added to Norwegian Sun include the Mexican eatery Los Lobos Cantina (replacing Las Ramblas Bar and Restaurant), Bliss Ultra Lounge (replacing Dazzles) and the Spinnaker Lounge (replacing the Observation Lounge).
Additionally, all 968 cabins were upgraded with smart televisions and USB ports, as well as new carpeting, artwork and select furniture.
The upgrades also touched dining outlets and public spaces including Cagney's, La Cucina, Le Bistro, Teppanyaki, the Mandara Spa, Stardust Lounge Theater and Splash Academy.
Norwegian Star also received three new venues: Sky High Bar, Bliss Ultra Lounge (replacing Spinnaker) and Spice H2O. The Sky High Bar, which replaces the Bier Garten, is an outdoor bar and lounge with seating for almost 120 people. Spice H2O is Norwegian Cruise Line's adults-only top-deck enclave featuring a private pool, hot tubs and full bar.
All 1,174 cabins and suites were outfitted with USB ports and received new artwork, carpeting, headboards and select furniture.
The refurb also touched the Atrium Cafe & Bar, Garden Cafe buffet, main dining room and the casino, to which a VIP section was added.
