(10:35 a.m. EDT) -- Effective immediately, for all sailings on or after December 1, 2018, Holland America Line will charge $1 more per person, per day, for service charges regardless of what type of cabin is booked.

The new gratuity amount for inside, ocean-view and balcony cabins will be $14.50 per person, per day, while the new service charge for those staying in suites will be $16. Passengers on the 2019 Grand World and the 2019 Grand South America Antarctica voyages will be grandfathered in to the lower gratuity levels.

According to Holland America, the daily service charge is entirely paid to the crewmembers and is split between those who work with passengers directly (dining room wait staff and room stewards), as well as those in support roles (galley and laundry staff). Passengers may adjust their gratuities if they feel the service they've received has exceeded or failed to meet their expectations.

The last time Holland America raised its gratuities was May 1, 2017.
