Spirit Of Discovery Overview

Saga Cruises new ship -- Spirit of Discovery -- will make its debut in the summer of 2019.

The 999-passenger ship will be built at the Meyer-Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany -- marking the first new-build vessel for the over-fifty travel specialist.

Saga has employed design company SMC Design, which has extensive experience with cruise ship design, having worked on P&O Cruises' popular Indian restaurant, Sindhu; Norwegian Cruise Line's Mandara Spa; Viking Cruises' the Explorers' Lounge and many other restaurants and bars on ships.

The ship will have 540 all-balcony cabins and suites, 100 of which will be specifically designed for solo passengers.

Other features include:

  • Two specialty restaurants
  • A main dining room and a Britannia Lounge
  • Two swimming pools
  • A theatre
  • A library, spa and beauty salon.

Spirit of Discovery will join the line's two existing ships -- Saga Sapphire and Saga Pearl II -- although it is believed that the new build will replace one of the two older ships.

The 55,900 GT vessel will be approximately 234 metres long and 30.8 metres wide.

Itineraries for Spirit of Discovery will go on sale in September 2017.
