We chose this cruise because of the itinerary and the price. We were able to get a very low Interline rate and would never have paid the full brochure price. For what we paid we got everything that a "real" passenger would get except for the round-trip Business Class Air, a night in a hotel and transfers. We did get tips, beverages, specialty dining and shore excursions.
We have cruised on Azamara and Crystal (As well as Celebrity, RCL, HAL and Princess) with a total of 45 cruises under our belts. We especially wanted to see if Regent could match the fine experiences we have had on both Azamara and Crystal as well as Celebrity. We were, generally, "underwhelmed". We often found ourselves saying, "But Crystal (or Azamara or Celebrity) does this so much better!".
We very much enjoyed the itinerary which started in Southampton and includes Zeebrugge, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Riga, Tallinn, St. Petersburg (2 nights), Helsinki and ended in Stockholm.
The included shore excursions were very good with excellent guides in all cities. It was difficult, however, to schedule more than one shore excursion in a day.
The dining was very good. We were able, somehow to have the same table for two at the window and the same excellent waiter for all but three nights. One of those was at Sette Mare at La Veranda -- the Italian Restaurant that replaces the buffet each evening. The food there was less than memorable and the service amateurish. We think it's where they do training.
Our meals in the other two restaurants were very good with the level of service you would expect in a "nice" restaurant but nothing that wowed us. We felt that the entrees served in the MDR were actually better.
The level of service didn't match Azamara or Crystal or even Celebrity. It seemed that there was a great deal of confusion on who was supposed to do what. We noticed this especially at the Pool Grill. Does the drink server take the food order? Can a waiter take a drink order? We also saw, twice, a crew member being disciplined in a loud and very public manner.
It was a good cruise and, at the price we paid, good value. We spoke with many others who had paid the full fare or who had gotten "deals" that gave them a couple of thousand dollars off the brochure rate. We felt for them. Nothing offered on board was really worth that amount of money.
The cabin was quite large with a large walk-in closet and a marble bath with both a tub and a separate shower. The decor was dated and a bit worn. The beds were comfortable and we enjoyed having a stocked, complimentary mini bar.
The rather small balcony had two nice chairs that reclined and had pads. The table was too small to be of much use, however. We prefer the larger tables on Crystal and Azamara that can actually be used for dining.
One feature that we did really like was the table top that is stored in the closet and can be fitted to the coffee table. We like breakfast in the cabin and it was nice to have the table set for us each morning and to not have to juggle plates! (BTW, the quality of the food at breakfast was uneven. They just couldn't get poached eggs right. One would be hard boiled and the other runny and undercooked. Celebrity gets it right every time!)
We toured on our own. The Titanic Museum is quite good.
Very good excursion. It was a hot day and that and the uneven paving made it difficult for some on the tour.
View All 51 Walking Tour ReviewsVery good excursion into the countryside with a driveby tour in the city.
View All 36 Windmills Driving Tour ReviewsWe chose the tour that gave an overview of Copenhagen and then went to Sweden to both Malmo and Lund. Very interesting to compare the two countries in one day. Also to see Santiago Calatrava's "Twisting Torso" building in Malmo.
View All undefined undefined ReviewsTallinn is a fascinating city and we had a wonderful, funny and knowledgeable guide.
View All 189 Old Town of Tallinn ReviewsWe were not given the opportunity to go inside.
View All 210 Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood ReviewsWe were admitted one hour before the general public. It made a huge difference!
View All 377 Hermitage Museum ReviewsA different view of the city and a pleasant afternoon on the water.
View All 152 Neva River Cruise ReviewsThis was a very good show in a former Imperial Officers' Club building. We had champagne in the ballroom during intermission.
View All 53 Russian Folk Dance ReviewsNo time to enter and it is undergoing restoration so the exterior views include scaffolding.
View All 113 St. Isaac's Cathedral ReviewsVery good tour. Because it was Sunday we could not enter The Rock Church. We ended the tour at the Sunday Market which was a short walk from the ship.
