After reading the mixed reviews, we were pleasantly surprised. We thought we were joining a lifeless ship with surly staff, poor food, rubbish entertainment with hard, grey towels, a steward that enters your room unannounced and single ply toilet paper!!! The only one of them statements that we found to be true was the toilet paper. It was hardly the sandpaper other reviewers had made it sound, just double it up...
Every member of the crew we encountered were helpful, friendly and offered fantastic service. They work so hard and should be appreciated.
Our cabin steward explained all we needed to know on arrival, we barely saw him after that. He would clean the room etc when we were out. Just use the ‘I’m resting’ sign supplied and they won’t walk in...
Psssst.... Little secret, there is absolutely no restriction to the view from this cabin, despite being categorised as obstructed view. It overlooks the smoking area outside Java, but this never caused us an issue, despite us both being non smokers and usually bothered by the smell, it didn’t seem to reach us. The cabin was clean and big enough with enough space to store our clothes etc. Small ‘turning circle’ in the bathroom, but ok. The balcony is not huge, but big enough for the 2 of us. Good tv with nice selection of films etc. No real negatives.
Walked in to town and visited the local Cathedral, thoroughly enjoyed it.
Got on the road train from right outside the port, it was excellent. A good tour that takes you to the top of the mountain with fantastic views, costs less than £20 per person, lasting about 1 and a 1/4 hours, with a fifteen minute stop for photos.
Sail away from here was great, the locals play music and come out to wave you off. Probably the only place on this itinerary that we regret not booking an excursion. Apparently the Glaciers are amazing.
Larger town with a lot to see, but unfortunately our time was limited here.
